Phnom Penh is Cambodia's capital, located at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. Because of its access to the rivers and capacity to travel further afield, the city was vital under both the Khmer Empire and the French colonial period. Phnom Penh has become a little more modern in recent years, with a lively bar strip, some wonderful walking paths with parks along the river, and several excellent historical sites to see, like the Royal Palace, National Museum, and Silver Pagoda, all of which are located in the middle of town. Phnom Penh may not be ideal on its alone, so we suggest combining it with Siem Reap or another of Southeast Asia's outstanding golf and culture sites.
